The Bucks County Intermediate Unit (Bucks IU) is hosting an interactive group meeting to provide information to students and their families on concussions and the child’s return to the classroom following this type of brain injury.  Recently, there has been a significant amount of research and funding on concussion and recovery as the long-term effects become better identified and understood.  Focusing on middle and high school students and their families, this meeting will be on Tuesday October 25, 2016 from
6:00-7:30pm at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit located at 705 N. Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown PA.  Students who have experienced a concussion, along with their families, are all encouraged to attend.

This free event, conducted with the students attending one session and the families another, will utilize interactive group discussion formats in which general concussion information will be shared along with specific strategies for addressing the student’s return to learning.  The students will have the opportunity to discuss their individual challenges within a supportive environment that can help them gain insights into their own experiences. They will be joined by Heather Karmazin (M.Ed) - School Counselor, Marci Cianni (MSW, LSW, HSV) - Social Worker, and Sarah Krusen (MA CCC/SLP CBIST) - Speech Language Pathologist, all of the Bucks IU BrainSTEPS Team and who work extensively with students in our community as they endeavor to resume their classroom learning.   The families will be speaking with Roni Robinson, Nurse Practitioner from the Concussion Clinic of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Ms. Robinson’s focus has been on the outreach and support of families as the students return to their academic environments.

No pre-registration is required and light refreshments will be served.  A second meeting will be held on April 25, 2017 and information regarding that will be sent out closer to the event date.    Should you have any questions about the BrainSTEPS program, concussion support, or this event, please contact Heather Karmazin at 215-534-7884 ( hkarmazin@bucksiu.org) or Marci Cianni at 267-446-0022 ( mplassa@bucksiu.org).
