Metropolitan Ballet is a nonprofit regional dance company that has earned wide acclaim for its high quality performances. The Company first presented The Rainbow Fish, based on the beloved children’s tale by Marcus Pfister (©1992 North South Books, Inc.) and choreographed by Jennifer Sommers, in 2006. Sleeping Beauty, Act III, featuring a storybook kingdom with choreography after Petipa, had its Company premiere in 2004. Together in one family-friendly program, these two dances will delight all ages. “The Family Concert Series is designed to be a dance performance for all generations—a community cultural event that children, parents and even grandparents call all enjoy together. Our dancers are excited to perform these children’s classics,” says the Company’s Founder and Artistic Director, Lisa Collins Vidnovic.
Adding to the family fun is the annual Family Concert Series Tea Party event held between the 1 pm and 4 pm shows on Sunday, November 20 in the Abington Friends School Library. In keeping with the theme of The Rainbow Fish, families are invited to enjoy “Tea under the Sea” from 2:30 to 3:45 pm, featuring a reading of the book plus games and refreshments. Children are welcome to come in sea-themed costumes. A $35 ticket includes Tea Party admission to the Tea Party plus one seat for any Family Concert Series performance.
“While giving our dancers valuable performance experience, Metropolitan’s Family Concert Series is a wonderful way for families and schools to introduce children to dance, with fully-produced story ballets that delight and inspire, performed by highly talented student dancers including boys from our renowned Boys’ Scholarship Program,” says Vidnovic. “The Series is part of our mission to bring high quality dance to our community, to help people of all ages develop a love and appreciation for dance and the arts. We are grateful to the Matthews Children’s Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and our many donors who make these productions possible, and we welcome all to enjoy them.”
