Tanning Centers, Salons & Spas
The indoor tanning industry was born in Germany in 1906 when a medical company (Heraeus) invented individual UV tanning lamps to help patients produce more Vitamin D for the absorption of calcium. This sunlight therapy was especially beneficial to those suffering with bone diseases like Ricketts. In the 1920’s after 2 well-known French women (Coco Chanel and Josephine Baker) sported golden brown skin, having a tan quickly became stylish. Tanning beds (sun beds) were first manufactured in the 1970s. Since 1988, federal regulations have been in place to ensure that tanning salons and tanning bed manufacturers adhere to a set of skin cancer prevention guidelines.
