CRY (Child Relief and You)- Yardley/Morrisville Yardley, PA
One in every six girl children dies of a deadly disease. DISCRIMINATION. Thousands are killed even before they are born. Of all the deprived communities in India, girl children are the most vulnerable. Do you know that 10,000 children die every day in India more than any earthquake or Tsunami? Two million Indian babies die each year before they celebrate their first birthday. Millions of India's children go to bed each night hungry, hopeless and angry. Should they not deserve what we provide to our own children? It is because of this reality that CRY - Child Relief and You exists today - to amplify the voice of children. We believe that children are citizens in their own right, entitled to the full spectrum of human rights. All it takes is communities becoming aware of their rights and coming together to ensure them. Not just by enrolling children in schools but by addressing the root causes that keep them hungry, illiterate, exploited and abused. Causes like gender, caste, livelihoods and displacement. CRY at Morrisville is an action center which will help deprived and abused children of India. It needs volunteer, people like YOU, each one of you to get involved by contributing your time, talent, skills and dedication to raise funds through events, sales of products and donations. We are grandparents and interested individuals working for Children's Rights. We believe the Pennsylvania Statutes, especially what is called the Grandparent Visitation Act, Pa.C.S.A. Sec. 5313, should be changed to allow grandparents standing to petition family courts for grandchild visitation. All too often, bonds are broken between grandchild and grandparent for reasons of vindictiveness. Quite often this occurs because of observed child abuse, misunderstandings, or parental jealousy. Children have no rights, no voice, no lobbying power, and no movements on their behalf. The U.S., especially, Pennsylvania favors so tenaciously Parental Rights and the old English common law where children were mere chattels and part of the labor force. In addition, much needs to be done to convince our government to ratify the United Nations Conference on the Rights of Children. Only the U.S. and Somalia have failed to ratify. Violence against children in the United States is exceeds that of any other country. Over 80,000 grandparents in PA are currently raising their grandchild. We need to visit legislators, collect petitions, and make the public aware of the status of our children.

Luekemia & Lymphoma society Furlong, PA
I'm going to ride in a century (one hundred mile) bike ride. Think I’m crazy? Truth be told, you may not be so far off the mark! One hundred miles seems like a really long way to go. I mean a really, really long way to go. Why am I doing it? A very sane reason is driving my decision. I am a volunteer of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Specifically, I am involved in the Team in Training, a program to raise funds and complete a 100-mile century bike ride this season to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In exchange for my fundraising, the Team in Training program will help me train for the ride, provide coaching and medical guidance and will place me with other riders of similar skills. Proceeds from the Team in Training program will support extensive research and local patient service programs for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Leukemia is the number one disease killer of children but it takes the lives of more adults than children each year. So here I am, seizing my opportunity. My goals are two-fold. To cross the finish line of the century bike ride in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on June 7th and to raise $5,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by March. I'm hoping you will be able to help me with both of these goals. Your encouragement and positive reinforcement (“You road HOW MANY miles today?”) will go an incredibly long way in helping me complete my training and ultimate goal. Your financial support will not only help save the lives of those afflicted with blood-related cancers, but also make their lives more comfortable and manageable while they are fighting – and winning – against the disease. Consider also that many of the strides that are made toward curing blood-related cancers translate into making a difference in fighting all types of cancers. To donate, the easiest way is to go to my Team in Training web page by following the link below: http://pages.teamintraining.org/epa/ambbr09/ssnyderi2y Or you can send a check to me at my home address. Please make your check out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with my name in the memo. If you are so inspired to take up this tremendous cause, please share this letter and request with anyone who might be inclined to help. Every contribution will have an impact and will be appreciated by so very many others and myself. Finally, if you know someone who has been afflicted with cancer, I would love to ride in his or her honor, as a symbol of strength and endurance patients and caregivers possess. Please let me know their name(s) so I can ad them to my web page. I am riding in memory of my husband, who succumbed to cancer nine years ago at the age of 44. Thank you so very much! Sjögren's is one of the most prevalent autoimmune disorders, striking as many as 4,000,000 Americans. Nine out of ten patients are women. The average age of onset is late 40s although Sjögren's occurs in all age groups in both women and men. About 50% of the time Sjögren's syndrome occurs alone, and 50% of the time it occurs in the presence of another connective tissue disease. The four most common diagnoses that co-exist with Sjögren's syndrome are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus, Systemic Sclerosis (scleroderma) and Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis. Sometimes researchers refer to the first type as "Primary Sjögren's" and the second as "Secondary Sjögren's." All instances of Sjögren's syndrome are systemic, affecting the entire body. The hallmark symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth. Sjögren's may also cause dryness of other organs, affecting the kidneys, GI tract, blood vessels, lung, liver, pancreas, and the central nervous system. Many patients experience debilitating fatigue and joint pain. Symptoms can plateau, worsen, or go into remission. While some people experience mild symptoms, others suffer debilitating symptoms that greatly impair their quality of life.

Tamanend Park Southampton, PA
The mission of the Friends of Tamanend is to maintain, conserve, and protect the unique natural and historic features of Tamanend Park Tamanend Park was originally part of the Lenni-Lenape domain. From William Penn's grant of 500 acres to John Martin, the tract passed through many hands. Southampton resident George Long purchased the property in 1914. In 1938 George Long and his wife, Sarah, deeded the farm, dwellings and outbuildings to their son, William, who established the Southampton Nurseries. William Long, a self-taught botanist, used his nursery to introduce new species of trees and shrubs into the Philadelphia area in the 1950's. Today, large, 60 year old specimens of exotic trees, left over from the nursery, give Tamanend Park its special character. There is a Sequoia Giganteum, found near the tennis courts and three Dawn Redwoods grow behind the gazebo. In 1974, Southampton Township, together with Centennial School District purchased 102.36 acres as Southampton's Community Park. The name "Tamanend" honors the Lenape sachem, Tamanend, who agreed to a treaty of peace with William Penn. Tamanend Park contains a circa 1740 farmhouse, carriage house and barn. The Friends of Tamanend rely on the support of volunteers and members, who pay a nominal annual fee of $10.00 for a family membership. Members receive a quarterly newsletter, invitations to special events, and can participate in monthly board meetings. Volunteers are always welcomed to assist with special events, outdoor programs, and park cleanups. If you have a specialized background and you can share, please let us know! Women's Humane Society Bensalem, PA
Currently, all of our volunteer positions are filled. You are welcome to learn more about us here and we will change this status once we have the turnover and new programming that necessitates bringing on new volunteers. Founded in 1869, the Women's Humane Society provides comprehensive animal welfare services to prevent the abuse and neglect of animals through sheltering and adoption services, veterinary care and routine surgery, humane education and legislative action, cruelty investigations, and dog training services. Volunteers enhance our mission through a variety of human service and clerical roles. Volunteers balance keeping our Internet animal list up-to-date with daily status changes while providing tour guide services and pre-screening adoption applications. Some of these volunteers will advance to conducting an adoption from start to finish. Once animals are adopted, volunteers provide follow-up calls to all adopters to make sure animals are adjusting well in their new homes and getting their medical needs met. Volunteers with strong, friendly communication skills greet callers and visitors to our walk-in veterinary clinic and shelter office. We take part in several events where volunteers assist our staff in educating visitors at dog shows, pet expos, and community days while raffling off donated items. Weekly calls to the owners of lost pets and comparing the updated records to stray animals at the shelter enhance the prognosis of lost pets being reunited with their owners. Volunteers with community service hours to fulfill conduct bake sales during our busy Saturday adoption and clinic hours. Once volunteers become trusted members of our organization, those showing the skills necessary to keep animals and people safe may advance to handling the animals for their photos, during the adoption procedure, when they have kenneled for an extended period of time and need socialization to meet their emotional needs, or daily exercise for the dogs in our enclosed yard. In the fall of 2012, we are embarking on renovations to our 18 year old facility to improve customer and animal comfort, care, and health. We are also implementing computerized data management systems.
