In 1682, Bucks County was created by William Penn who named it after Buckinghamshire in England, and built the country estate Pennsbury Manor in Falls Township. Many places in Bucks County were named after locations in Buckinghamshire, including Buckingham Township, Wycombe, named for the town of High Wycombe; Chalfont, named for the parish house Chalfont St Giles; andSolebury Township, named for Soulbury. Bucks County was split into three counties, including Northampton County in 1752 and Lehigh County in 1812 . On December 26, 1776, General George Washington launched his successful attack on the British and Hessian troops in Trenton, NJ, which was a turning point in the American War of Independence. Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania and Washington Crossing Historic Park were named to commemorate the event.
